Audi has announced that is 2011 A8 sedan will be available with a factory-installed in-car wireless hot spot.

“The WLAN hotspot is located within the rooftop antenna, and passengers can connect to the internet via any laptop, netbook or new-age tablet, like the Apple iPad,” explains Autoblog. “Audi says that the network is capable of speeds up to 7.2 Mbit/sec and that WAP2 encryption is on hand in order to securely transfer data. Audi claims that this is the first such factory-installed system, although other automakers offer WiFi connectivity with dealer installed accessories.”

In comparison to similar dealer-installed systems, Audi’s hotspot is making a good first impression on the automotive press.

Top Speed compliments the connection speed, noting it’s “pretty fast considering that this is a new in-car technology for Audi.” And CrunchGear compares the system favorably to Autonet, GM’s and Chrysler’s wi-fi solution. They write, “Unlike other options — like Autonet — this system is polished and seemingly beautifully integrated into the vehicle. This is the future.”

In addition to using their computers, A8 drivers can establish an internet connection using Bluetooth and a compatible mobile phone with a SIM Access Profile. According to Audi’s press release, “Any existing mobile phone contract can be used for this — often coupled with a flat-rate data plan.”
