Ford has announced that its 2011 Mustang will not only boast a 305-horsepower V6 but will also net 30 to 31 miles per gallon on the highway and 19 miles per gallon in the city – making it the most fuel-efficient 300-plus-horsepower car ever.

“If you want the extra 1 mpg on the highway from your Mustang, order the six-speed automatic,” advises AutoWeek. “Ford says it engineered the transmission with close gear ratios and shift programs to maximize highway fuel economy.”

Left Lane News explains, “Ford says that it was able to achieve these historic numbers through a combination of external aerodynamic changes to the vehicle, in addition to significant efforts to optimize efficiency within the engine and the rest of the drivetrain.”

Autoblog notes that the Mustang’s competitor, the 304-horsepower Chevy Camaro, nets just two miles per gallon less on the highway. “Sure, the new Mustang V6 is only marginally more powerful and efficient than its Camaro counterpart, but clawing above that 30 mpg mark will no doubt get Ford’s thoroughbred some extra ink in the press,” they write.

The Mustang will also offer a 412-horsepower V8 engine, though Ford has yet to announce its fuel economy numbers. The 2011 Mustang goes on sale this spring. According to Edmunds Inside Line, “Ford says more than 11,000 orders have been placed already — with half of those for the V6 version.”
