So you think the 2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is badass? Well the 2011 model just beat — no, obliterated — its lap time record at Virginia International Raceway by a whopping nine seconds.
Autoblog reports: “Ford’s engineers had it in their minds that the new aluminum block with its 120-pound weight savings should help the car click off the 4.1-mile Grand West portion of the track about three seconds quicker than the outgoing car. Thing is, the 2011 GT500 managed to lap the track in 2:58.5 — a full nine seconds faster than last year’s version.”
Best of all, Ford released a video of one of its test drivers shattering the record — and it’s shot from his point of view. Check it out on AutoWeek.
According to Jalopnik, “The latest iteration of Ford’s muscle car is lighter, more powerful and more nimble thanks to the track-day SVT Performance Package, which includes lighter wheels, stiffer springs, and a higher rear axle ratio.” Not only is the new Pony 120 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, but it also provides a 10-horsepower advantage, for a total of 550 horsepower.
