Kia has officially entered the hybrid market, as the Korean automaker revealed the 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid yesterday at the Los Angeles Auto Show. “With a stunning design, roomy interior, and estimated 40 mpg class-leading fuel efficiency, Kia’s first-ever hybrid in the U.S. will attract those looking for a striking and well-equipped sedan that does not sacrifice style, comfort, performance or value for fuel efficiency,” says Kia.

But how will the Optima Hybrid stack up against other hybrid cars? Edmunds says, “Kia intends to do battle with Toyota over the hybrid sedan fuel economy crown.” And it may well have an advantage, “the Optima Hybrid weighs 3,490 pounds, making it lighter than the Camry Hybrid and the [Ford] Fusion Hybrid. The Camry Hybrid has a 3,680-pound curb weight, while the Fusion Hybrid has a curb weight of 3,720 pounds,” says Kia.

But light weight isn’t all the Optima Hybrid has going for it. According to Daily Tech, “The Kia Optima Hybrid uses the same powertrain as its platform-mate, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. As a result, the vehicle features a 166hp 2.4-liter gasoline engine which is used in conjunction with a 40hp electric motor. The electric motor is fed by a 96-pound lithium-ion battery pack which is mounted in the rear of the vehicle. Additionally Kia notes that, “The Optima Hybrid also is among the first full hybrid systems on the market to use a typical step-ratio automatic transmission.” A rare feature considering most hybrids on the market are equipped with CVTs.

To help achieve better fuel economy, “The Hybrid is also 5mm lower than the standard car and features low rolling resistance tyres, low-drag wheels, smooth underfloor panels and an active air flap in the front grille. Inside, the instrument panel features an “ECO guide” to aid economical driving,” writes Car Advice. The 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid is set to hit dealerships in early 2011 with price yet to be determined. If Kia stays in line with their reputation for offering consumers tremendous value, the Kia Optima Hybrid could be serious competition in the expanding market of hybrid cars.
