Got a Ford Escort? Is it green? Stay out of Oregon.

The Associated Press reports, “An arsonist is apparently on the prowl for green Ford Escorts from the 1990s. Three of them have been burned in recent weeks, a series of acts that Medford [Oregon] police Sgt. Mike Budreau described as ‘pretty bizarre.’”

United Press International adds, “Medford police said the most recent incident occurred Sunday, when a 1995 green Escort parked outside of a home was found destroyed after someone broke a window, poured flammable liquid into the car and set it on fire,”

Autoblog comments, “There’s some kind of back story here that nobody yet knows,” and engages in some conjecture about the arsonists motives. “Perhaps it’s some deep-seated latent hatred for a first car. Or maybe a green Escort was driven by an unrequited love interest. As hateful as the little Ford of yore is, it’s just not worth it.”

The Escort was sold in the U.S. from 1981 to 2003, before it was succeeded by the Ford Focus. Edmunds named it the “Most Significant Car of 1981,” noting that “Just one year after its introduction the Escort earned the title of “Best-Selling Car in America.” So though there is at least one Escort hater out there now, at one point, people liked this car.
