Zero-to-sixty times under five seconds and low emissions don’t often go together. In fact, supercar manufacturers in Europe are worried that new environmental regulations could put them out of business. But Germany may have an answer in the works.

The U.K.’s AutoCar explains, “BMW is exploring a plan to build what a senior company official calls ‘a breakthrough green supercar’ by the end of 2012.” The car is “intended to showcase BMW’s Efficient Dynamics programme, combining fuel-saving technology such as direct injection, brake energy regeneration and stop-start,” while producing performance similar to “the Audi R8 and forthcoming Mercedes SLC.”

One BMW source told AutoCar the project would lead to “a modern-day M1,” a reference to a BMW supercar produced in the 1970s. BMW recently paid tribute to that car with a “retro M1 Homage concept,” though the press was told at the time that the project wasn’t intended to lead to a production car.

Autoblog notes that “the automaker expects fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions to be on par with a mid-range 5-series sedan.”

We’re happy to hear that BMW wants to build a green supercar, but if the goal is to make it as environmentally friendly as a large luxury sedan, the bar seems a bit low. Some testers, we’d like the point out, have managed sub-four-second zero-to-sixty times in the ultra-nimble Tesla Roadster – which doesn’t use a drop of gas. Green supercars sound like a great idea…but we’ll hold out for that hybrid Ferrari that reportedly on the drawing board now
