Daily Auto News BMW Confirms Plans for Front-wheel Drive Cars

Daily Auto News

The demand for small, luxury front-wheel drive cars is forecasted to continue growing, and BMW plans on taking full advantage of it by developing a new front-wheel drive platform.

“This platform will not only underpin the next generation of Mini vehicles, but also the BMW 1 Series and likely a smaller car to compete with Audi’s A1,” reports Cars.com. “The company is already developing new three-cylinder turbocharged engines for future small cars, and this new platform certainly sounds promising.”

However, BMW has no plans to produce the common man’s Bimmer. At a Munich press conference, [Norbert] Reithofer “stressed he wanted BMW to remain ‘a high-end manufacturer and not a mass manufacturer’ that would remain ‘independent’ as the sector looks to consolidation for survival,” reports AFP. Reithofer is BMW’s CEO.

“While exact details remain shrouded in secrecy…the new entry-level BMW has been conceived to run the same front-drive underpinnings as the next-generation Mini Cooper,” confirms AutoWeek. If that’s the case, car shoppers can expect the new BMW platform to hit dealer lots as early as 2013 to 2014 — around the same time that the latest and greatest Mini Cooper is set to debut.
