BMW downsizes classic straight six engine

BMW downsizes classic straight six engine Straight six petrol engine makes way for twin turbo 2.0-litre as BMW downsizes.
BMW isn’t backward in looking forward, and has just announced that its creamy-smooth naturally aspirated straight-six petrol engine is going to be superseded by an all-new, downsized unit.Â
The new 2.0 TwinPower engine will be introduced in the X1 xDrive28i at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Although the X1 range in the UK is diesel only, the new petrol engine is big news as it will be added to the 1-Series, X3, 3-Series, Z4 roadster and 5-Series ranges.
Featuring a 2.0-litre displacement, and closely modelled on the design of BMWs latest six-cylinder turbo engines, the new four-cylinder engine is the first BMW petrol unit to use its twin-scroll twin turbos. The unit features an all-aluminium crankcase, the latest version of BMW’s VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and direct injection.
In the X1, the engine puts out 242bhp, slightly down on the outgoing unit’s 254bhp, but torque climbs 40Nm to 350Nm and is developed at lower revs. That means that the manual car’s 0-62mph time falls from 6.8 seconds to 6.1 seconds, but efficiency improves to 35.7mpg, up 5.7 mpg, and CO2 emissions fall 38g to 183 g/km, thanks in part to standard fit stop start.
On the options list will be an M Sports Package, which includes sports suspension, different wheels, a bodykit and sports seats. This will be available on all X1 models and will come to the UK.
