Typing out a text message on your cell phone’s tiny keyboard while driving is dangerous. Driving with a pack of bouncy, jittery, fifteen-pound carnivores in your lap, however, is apparently safe. At least in California.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) has signed a bill banning texting while driving, but vetoed a bill banning driving with a dog or other animal on your lap. The AP explains, “Republican Assemblyman Bill Maze says the practice is distracting. He introduced the bill after seeing a woman driving with three dogs on her lap. Schwarzenegger says he’s signing only bills that are ‘the highest priority for California.’ And a lapdog ban isn’t one of them.”
We can only assume that signing his name to a piece of paper takes a lot out of the governor, and he has to conserve his energy for the big stuff.
Kicking Tires comments, “We don’t really see the distinction here, other than the fact that text messaging is probably more commonplace than irresponsible dog owners.”
Autoblog adds, “We do sometimes wonder why a 40-pound kid has to be in a child seat, but a 40-pound, unpredictable animal can take a nap between you and the steering wheel.”
