The new car has been clocked officially at 3.0-seconds, making it just half a second slower than a Bugatti Veyron over the same distance.

The £69,950 GT-R is also a useful 0.6 seconds quicker from 0-62mph than its great rival, the PDK-equipped Porsche 911 Turbo, which will set you back £108,479.

The GT-R’s acceleration time was measured at the Sendai Hi-land Race Way in Japan on November 12th. Nissan even went to length of publishing the weather conditions, which were sunny with intermittent cloud.Â

The first 3.0-second run took place when the temperature was 14.9°C, while the warmer 18.6°C conditions later in the day had no effect on the speed run, with the car posting an identical 0-62mph time.

The 2011 GT-R features a number of enhancements over the current car, including tweaks to the styling and suspension, and a hike in power for the 3.8-litre V6 from 478bhp to 523bhp

The 3.0-second time was set with a completely standard car, with its suspension and stability control set to R.Â

The all-electric Leaf scored 257 points, and beat competition from six other finalists, including the Alfa Romeo Giulietta (248) and Vauxhall Meriva (244), which came in second and third respectively.

The remaining finalists were the Ford C-MAX and Grand C-MAX (224), the Citroen C3 and DS3 (175), the Volvo S60 and V60 (145) and the Dacia Duster (132).

The Leaf marks Nissan’s second victory in the competition, having taken the gong in 1993 with the Micra supermini.

The competition has been run since 1964. 59 jury members from 23 European countries voted in this year’s competition. Each country gets allotted a number of jurors which takes into account that countries car market share and car industry, with the UK having six jurors on the voting panel.

Analysts have been worried that Nissan’s first all-electric car, the 2011 Nissan Leaf, would average a lot less than the 100 miles per charge the automaker claimed. After testing from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it turns out that Nissan was spot on..

“The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved its fuel-economy label for the 100-percent electric Nissan LEAF, rating the vehicle to be “best” in the midsize vehicle class for fuel efficiency and “best” for the environment,” Nissan Motor Corporation reports in a press release. “The new label shows a best-in-class 99 miles-per-gallon (MPG) equivalent (combined city/highway).” That means the Leaf will net 106 miles in the city and 92 on the highway.

While these numbers meet expectations, it’s important to keep in mind that the range will vary. The Boston Globe explains. “Mark Perry, Nissan North America’s director of product planning and strategy, said the vehicle’s range would vary based on driving conditions. Tests conducted by the Federal Trade Commission, which regulates advertising claims, had estimated a range of 96 to 110 miles per full charge and the company’s internal tests had found a broader range of 64 to 138 miles, Perry said.”

Most drivers will get average a lot less. The New York Times says the “Leaf’s official range [will] be 73 miles on a fully charged battery,” and “[b]ecause drivers cannot simply stop at a gas station and refuel, the Leaf’s range is expected to weigh heavily on shoppers’ minds.”

Nissan explains this further. “This calculation is based on the EPA’s formula of 33.7kW-hrs being equivalent to one gallon gasoline energy. In addition, the label displays a charging time of seven hours on a 240V charge and a driving range of 73 miles, based on the five-cycle tests using varying driving conditions and climate controls.”

Although the Leaf’s range isn’t ideal, shoppers who get the Leaf will save a lot of money because they can use electricity, which is a lot cheaper than gasoline. The EPA estimates that it will cost $561 a year to “fuel” the Leaf, which about half of what it costs to fill up some midsize and small cars annually.

Still, the Nissan Leaf is a lot to digest — its range is short and it must be charged, which becomes difficult once owners leave their homes. What’s the best bet for now? Wait. See how the Leaf does on the market for the first year. Gauge consumer reactions. Do they like it? Is it practical for drivers who just need to get to work? If your answer is yes, and you can swallow the Leaf’s $25,280 price (after tax reductions), go for it. Just make sure you sign up for a Leaf during the second wave of reservations, because the first 22,000 have already been claimed.

The Jeep Wrangler probably didn’t see it coming. The Wrangler is currently the only drop top SUV you can buy. The Nissan Murano is trying to change that, and some automotive journalists are asking why.

MotorTrend isn’t sure the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet makes a lot of sense. “When Nissan first announced it would build a convertible version of its Murano crossover, heads were scratching all over the industry. Well at least Nissan can say it has created ‘the world’s first all-wheel drive crossover convertible’. Um, congratulations?”

Jalopnik sees the Murano CrossCabriolet as a little bundle of . . . joy. “Today’s birth of the 2011 Nissan Murano Cross Cabriolet makes me think a 370Z convertible and a Murano crossover spent one very awkward tequila-fueled night in a Tijuana motel room over spring break.”

Not everyone sees the Murano CrossCabriolet as some sort of unholy spawn. Autoblog says, “Incredibly, it’s not nearly as much of a horror show as we’d feared. The transition to two-door form isn’t so bad at all, and we’re pleased to see that there’s no Volkswagen Golf Cabrio-style basket handle. Still… weird. But hey, props to Nissan for having the guts to do some different things lately.”

Nissan, writing on Facebook, says the CrossCabriolet “delivers the open-air exhilaration of a convertible while extending the versatility of the Murano in exciting new ways. With room for four adults, space for golf bags or luggage (even with the top down), and a premium level interior, the Murano CrossCabriolet represents a breakthrough in concept and design.”

If the Murano CrossCabriolet actually can deliver comfortable passenger space and enough cargo room for everyday use, it could be a hit, even though car reviewers don’t know what to make of it. Most convertibles are for two people only, with backseat comfort being a major complaint. Plus, drop tops tend to have limited cargo space, especially with the top down. Finally, with today’s drivers being more used to the upright, higher seating position of crossovers and SUVs, the Murano CrossCabriolet may lure in some buyers who passed on other convertibles for being too cramped, impractical and low to the ground.

Pricing on the 2011 Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet has not been announced. It is expected to hit dealerships in early 2011.

Nissan Leaf available to pre-order from September Leaf to cost £23,990 when UK order books open, Portugal gets first European cars.
The future is available to order! Nissan is now taking deposits for its electric Leaf in Portugal and Ireland. The two markets are the first in Europe to get the groundbreaking EV. The UK will be third, with Nissan taking orders from September 1st.

Customers will be required to put down a fully refundable £257 deposit. Those who do will be invited to test-drive the Leaf in December, at which point they will need to formally confirm their order.

Deliveries are set to commence next year, with the first cars arriving in Portugal in January, Ireland in February and the UK in March. The car costs £23,990 in the UK including the battery and the government’s £5,000 ‘Plug-in’ car grant. Running costs are anticipated at less than £1.59 per 62 miles in the UK.

The Leaf is designed to be no more expensive to buy than a conventional hatchback, and much cheaper to run. It features air conditioning, sat-nav and a parking camera as standard, and its battery range is 100 miles.

Nissan already has almost 12,000 customers signed up in Europe for regular updates on the launch of the Leaf, while the firm has amassed more than 23,000 orders for the car in the USA and Japan, where the Leaf is already available to order.

Â

      Amazon.com Review

With a 2-3/4-inch bottom that fits most vehicle drink holders, this lightweight mug makes hot coffee, tea, or chocolate available on the road. Hot beverages stay hot for at least 1 hour. Cold beverages stay chilled for several hours. Twist the finely threaded stopper tight, and the mug won’t leak even if it’s knocked over. Twist it about a quarter-turn and drink out of either side–lips on both sides make it easy–without removing the stopper.
