Chevrolet has apparently reversed its stance on its upcoming Camaro convertible. The drop-top muscle car was reportedly cancelled just last week. The company once again plans to build the convertible, but says it will arrive at least one year later than originally planned.
Kicking Tires reports, “The automaker now says we can expect the Camaro convertible to make its debut in early 2011, likely as a 2012 model.”
Plans for the car were scuttled last week when the German company scheduled to build its power top told GM it was on the verge of bankruptcy. However, KT explains, “Now the company appears to be solvent for the time being and will supply the tops.”
According to Motor Trend, “The supplier is still in business, and that it has come to an agreement with GM. Clearly, this is related to GM’s cash flow problems and its effect on suppliers.” Parts suppliers traditionally ship components to automakers and survive on credit while waiting for payment, but with the credit market for business tightening globally, they increasingly face the threat of collapse if automakers cannot make timely payments.
Kicking Tires comments, “Though GM says the Camaro convertible is back on, it’s important to keep in mind how vital the supplier line is to the health of car companies everywhere. Members of the automotive supply chain are highly interwoven, and trouble in any company has ripple effects elsewhere.”
