An American automaker makes one of the world’s best midsize cars, and it appears that Americans have finally figured that out.

The Chevy Malibu, for the first time, is one of the fastest-selling vehicles in America.

The Detroit Free Press reports, “When industrywide U.S. sales are down 18%, the Malibu — which competes in the hyper-competitive midsize car market — finished 2008 with U.S. sales up 51.5% from the year before.”

The Malibu sits atop our Affordable Midsize Car Rankings, which are based on the collective opinion of the automotive press. We read all of the reviews published about each model, turn the reviewers’ opinion of the each car’s attributes into a series of numerical scores, and use those scores to rank each car against its competition – so a car that holds the top position in our rankings isn’t just a car we like. It’s a car the entire automotive press is praising.

Malibu sales are finally catching up with the car’s reputation. Kicking Tires reports that 9,312 Malibus were sold in January – making the car the tenth-best-selling vehicle in the U.S. The Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima and Honda Accord still outsold the Malibu – but all three trail Chevy’s midsize car in our rankings.

GM still has work to do to improve public awareness of its midsize car, however. Canadian Driver reports that only 1.6 percent of the Malibus sold last month were the more fuel-efficient hybrid model.

This month, the Malibu is offered with a $2750 total cash allowance, or interest-free financing for qualified buyers. Research our best Chevrolet deals page for details
