General Motors will debut a green version of the Chevy Cruze at the New York Auto Show later this week. Named the Eco model, it will go on sale late this year and will get an estimated 40 miles per gallon on the highway.
The Cruze Eco will come with a 1.4-liter Ecotec turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 138 horsepower and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. An automatic transmission will be available, though GM has not released fuel economy estimates for that transmission or for the city with either transmission.
Auto Week notes, “Rather than cutting content to reduce weight, Chevy relied on aerodynamic improvements, an axle ratio that optimizes fuel economy and low-rolling-resistance tires.” Content-wise, the Cruze Eco comes with power windows, power locks and air conditioning, among other features.
Left Lane News details the Eco’s fuel-saving features, including “an optimized front axle ratio and ultra low rolling resistance Goodyear tires and lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels.” They also note that a “lowered stance reduces mpg-robbing air turbulence at highway speeds, while a lower front grille ‘air shutter’ closes at higher speeds to improve highway aerodynamics.”
Pricing and official fuel economy estimates won’t be available until later this year. However, the auto industry is already buzzing about this tiny green machine.
“The Cruze has been labeled by GM executives as the Detroit automaker’s most important new launch vehicle aimed at boosting fuel efficiency and meeting tougher federal regulations,” says Detroit News. “The Cruze is a bet by GM that customers will want a small car in large volumes at a time when crossovers and full-size sport-utility vehicles remain popular in the U.S. marketplace.”
