Daily Auto News Everyone Wins in April 2010 Auto Sales
Daily Auto News

If April 2010 sales are any indication, the auto industry continues to show steady gains. Last month, overall industry sales totaled 982,131 vehicles, which is a 19.8 percent increase over April 2009. However, it’s a decrease as compared to March 2010.
“The Detroit News explains, “Those numbers translated into a seasonally adjusted selling rate of just over 11.2 million units, down from nearly 11.8 million in March.”
Still, most automakers posted big increases as compared to a year ago.
“The number of double-digit percent increases in sales is perhaps the most telling bit of info to take away from this month’s chart,” writes Autoblog. “Only 13 brands did not have double-digit increases, and four of those were still single-digit increases while another three are shuttered brands from General Motors. Buyers are clearly in a buying mood.”
Nisan is one of the biggest winners, posting a 35.1 percent increase over April 2009. Other wins go to Ford, which posted a 24.9 percent increase, and Chrysler, which posted a 24.8 percent increase. Sales of General Motors’ four core brands (Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet and GMC) increased 19.7 percent compared to April 2009. And despite its recall troubles, even Toyota posted a 24.4 percent sales increase.
However, it’s important to remember that we’re comparing the April 2010 sales figures with last year’s sales – a year that was one of the worst the auto industry has ever seen. Even so, some automakers did manage to bring in record sales, far above and beyond not just last year’s numbers, but prior years as well.
Kicking Tires says, “Automakers such as Hyundai and Subaru recorded their best April sales in history, while luxury automaker Audi recorded its second best sales month ever. Clearly, this isn’t just a bump from last year’s economic turmoil.”
