Daily Auto News Feds: All Eligible Clunkers Claims Have Been Paid
Daily Auto News

It’s over. The government has process the last Cash for Clunkers application, and in most cases, the checks are in the mail to dealerships.
Automobile Magazine reports, “According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, nearly 98 percent of all rebate submissions for its Car Allowance Rebate System (or “Cash for Clunkers”) have been approved for payment.” Dealers, the DOT says, should receive payment by September 30.
The last two percent, according to Automotive News, have been sent back to dealerships for clarification. Department of Transportation employees “will work with dealers to help them correct and re-file improperly submitted applications.”
The final tally is impressive. Automobile reports, “In total, 681,426 rebate claims were submitted. Thus far, all but 14,834 submissions have been deemed as complete and valid. At this point, rebate payments will total approximately $2.9 billion, falling just short of the allotted $3 billion budget.”
Auto dealers, however, are still recovering. After an intense August when many broke sales records, dealerships have faced a quiet September with few customers. Those who are in the market post-Clunkers may find it easy to negotiate a fair deal this month.
