Auto news; Ford Tells GM: Happy 100th!

At its Central Headquarters building in Dearborn, Michigan, office lights were strategically illuminated to spell out “HAPPY 100 GM.” A sure sign of solidarity in this tough marketplace, where both automotive giants are struggling under the weight of slackening sales, a stressed U.S. economy, and a Federal Government that seems in no rush to grant them the billions in loan assistance they badly need to develop more fuel efficient strategies to boost sales to drivers who just won’t put gas guzzlers in their driveways any longer.
But we second Ford’s emotion. GM’s 100 years have brought a stream of technical innovations, incredible performance vehicles, and fond memories from the way back of mom’s wood-paneled (ok, wood-applique-paneled) Caprice Wagon. Though cars as we know them are changing radically, here’s hoping The General finds its recipe for success and sticks around for another century.
