With more Americans gravitating toward a environment-friendly lifestyle, automakers are prioritizing hybrid and electric cars. Infiniti, Chevrolet and Audi are just three manufacturers who are releasing models that are in line with the go green frenzy.
While Infiniti’s M sedan is available in the U.S., the M35 Hybrid, Nissan-Infiniti’s first Hybrid vehicle, won’t hit American highways until early 2011. “Infiniti comes however with a little particularity that offers a seamless driving experience rarely offered by its competitors,” Nihon Car explains. Unlike most hybrids, which use continuously variable transmissions, the M Hybrid uses a dual-clutch transmission to make the transition between electric and engine power more seamless.
Audi also has plans for a new hybrid, the R8 e-tron electric super car, but they’ve also announced plans for an electric city car to appear in limited numbers in 2012. egmCarTech explains that the car is expected to average 31 miles in the city. The e-tron city car, which is expected to be based on the A1, will available for purchase in about three to five years.
The Chevy Volt, Chevrolet’s electric sedan that will appear in late 2010, is already receiving so much press and public interest that the automaker plans to increase Volt production by 50 percent in 2012.
“The expanded U.S. production capacity is the latest in a series of positive developments for the Chevrolet Volt. This week, participating Chevrolet dealers in launch markets began taking customer orders for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, following the release of retail and lease pricing,” a GM press release explains.
