Return policies in the auto industry aren’t entirely unheard of, but they are awfully rare. That’s why Hyundai made quite a splash this year with its Assurance Program, which allowed buyers to return a car within the first 12 months of ownership in the event that they lost their income.

The program was only supposed to run a few months, but it has been such a sales success that Hyundai has extended it through the end of 2010. According to the company’s press release, “Hyundai sales increased 6.2 percent through November, improving market share faster than any other automaker in 2009, in part due to the strength of Hyundai Assurance.”

Along with the peace of mind the program provides, Hyundai buyers will also receive a transferable five-year/60,000-mile warranty and five-year 24-hour roadside assistance. Autoblog explains, “The program offers the usual suite of assistance that you would get from AAA including lockout aid, flat tire replacement, towing, jump starts and bringing you some gas if you run out.”

Edmunds Inside Line sees the extension as a coup for buyers, concluding, “Consumers win as Hyundai markets to the insecure times we live in.”
