Hyundai’s turbo Veloster spied Our spies catch the powerful new Veloster testing in the open for the first time, likely to debut at the Detroit motor show in 2012

Here are the pictures that prove Hyundai are set to deliver on their promise of a high performance variant of their eagerly awaited Scirocco rival – the quirky Veloster coupe.

As these spy shots reveal, the hot version – likely to be turbocharged – will be marked out by a new facia with deeper front air intakes and chin spoilers on either side of the front bumper; hinting at its sportier nature.

The uprated Veloster benefits from aggressive-looking side skirts too, while a pair of purposeful big-bore exhausts at the back complement the model’s already squat stance, giving the impression of an increased rear track.

There’s a chance that this Veloster could get a different suspension setup to the standard car too, with Hyundai’s engineers still tuning the final ride and handling characteristics for the entry level model.

Power will come from the same 1.6 litre direct injection petrol unit that appears in models lower down the range, but with forced induction boosting its power output to around 180bhp, an increase of over 40bhp. That should drop the 0-62mph sprint time down to a respectable 8.0 seconds, and push the top speed to well over 130mph.

However, a big part of the standard model’s appeal is the decent 45mpg claimed fuel economy and comparatively low CO2 output of 148g/km, so Hyundai are keen to keep the running costs of the quicker version on a par with key rivals.

Inside, expect the sporty theme is set to continue, with heavily bolstered front sports seats, stylish leather trim and even more kit than the well-equipped standard car, with a premium stereo and 7-inch touchscreen sat-nav likely to feature.

While there is no official word from the Korean firm on when this model will enter production, a debut at the Detroit Motor Show 2012 seems likely.
