Daily Auto News IKEA Car — Is It an April Fool's Joke?
Daily Auto News

IKEA and the World Wildlife Fund have come together to design a new, eco-friendly concept car called the Leko. The car will be offered first in France, and is scheduled for its public debut in seven days.
Wait…that’s April Fool’s Day.
There had to be a catch.
The Leko isn’t just a rumor. It has its own French web site, which appears to be operated by IKEA, offering videos featuring the car’s supposed designer, a photo of the car in profile covered by a sheet, and a launch countdown. Our French is rusty, but if we’ve understood correctly, the purported designer, who introduces himself as Christophe Grozs, tells viewers that the car uses a modular design and will be built as a coupe and a convertible.
Motor Authority comments, “IKEA wouldn’t be the first non car company to expand its horizons and actually build a car of its own, so there is a very real possibility that the Swedish furniture giant could be just a week away from unveiling a brand new concept car.”
But the launch date has most of the automotive press suspicious.
Autoblog comments, “We’ll resist the temptation to make a joke about how you’ll be directed by some cheezy stick figure drawings to assemble the car yourself with nothing more than a five-page word-free manual.”
“We’ll just have to sit back and make jokes about home assembly and poorly veneered fiberboard until we get the complete story at the end of the month,” Jalopnik writes.
