Daily Auto News It's Official: Alfa Romeo Returning to the U.S.
Daily Auto News

Remember when you were a kid, and your dad’s friend had that beautiful drop-top red Alfa Romeo Spider that barely ever started? We do. Sure, it seemed like he never had it running. The guy was always complaining about the thing. But she was heartbreak gorgeous to our teenage hearts, wasn’t she? There was something about those sensuous lines. Something in those smoldering Italian curves that made the high-maintenance nature of the relationship seem unimportant, and…where were we?
Oh, yes, cars. Alfa Romeo. Well, you’ll be able to get your own soon. Autoblog reports, “Italiophiles rejoice! Though the move isn’t unexpected, Fiat’s Sergio Marchionne has officially confirmed that the Alfa Romeo brand will make a return appearance to the United States starting in 2012.” The first Alfas to reach our shores since the brand gave up its tiny hold on the U.S. market in the early ‘90’s won’t be the sexy ones. Kicking Tires reports, “Three new models — a midsize SUV and a sedan and wagon both called the Giulia — will lead the charge.” In fact, the start is not particularly encouraging for fans of sinuous Italian beauties. KT notes, “The SUV will be based on a Chrysler product, possibly the Dodge Journey or new Jeep Grand Cherokee.” But it gets better from there. Autoblog reports, “One year later, Alfa plans to begin offering a five-door version of the beautiful MiTo hatchback in the States, which will be joined by a new Alfa Romeo Spider.” That Spider, we hope, will at last bring sexy Italian design back to the U.S. market. Alfa design chief Lorenzo Ramaciotti tells the AP, “Italian design can’t be repetitive. It must be a design that is a little surprising, with something innovative from one model to the next. If you have a car that takes you from point A to point B, why not have it be nice? If you are capable, why not?” American Alfa Romeo fans, deprived of anything like that ravishing Spider for nearly two decades, have to agree.
