Auto news; Mercedes SLR McLaren 722 S Roadster Mercedes unveils a drop top version of the special edition 722 SLR McLaren.
Once again Mercedes has lifted the lid on the SLR! This is the Mercedes SLR McLaren 722 S Roadster – a drop top version of the special edition 722 SLR supercar.
This is the fifth variant of the ‘McMerc’ since its introduction in 2003, as Mercedes makes the most of its halo car before replacing it with the SLC Gullwing in 2010.
Only 150 722 S Roadsters will be built by McLaren at its UK base in Woking, Surrey, and though prices are yet to be confirmed, the £50,000 premium commanded over the standard SLR for the Roadster equivalent should provide a good benchmark. As such, don’t expect much change from £400,000 for the newcomer.
Powered a 5.4-litre V8 engine developing 641bhp and 820Nm of torque (which is 24bhp and 40Nm more than the standard SLR’s output), the 722 S Roadster will demolish the 0-62mph sprint in 3.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 208mph. A five-speed manual gearbox transfers power from engine to wheels.
Further changes over the standard SLR include new, stiffer springs and dampers, new 19-inch aluminium rims, a new front splitter and an interior swathed in alcantara, suede, leather and carbon-fibre weave.
But the 722 S Roadster isn’t the McMerc’s swansong – that privilege is reserved for the SLR Speedster. Get all the latest on that car here.
The first cars will land on buyer’s drives during January next year.
