Mitsubishi may discontinue its Galant and Eclipse models by 2013.
“Major updates to Mitsubishi’s products are on the back burner as the company concentrates on developing small cars that can be sold around the world,” writes Autoweek. “That means the future is uncertain for the Galant, Endeavor and Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder, which Mitsubishi builds in the United States.”
If Mitsubishi does, in fact discontinue these models, it will be risking a lot. “Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket,” comments Top Speed. “With those models gone, that would leave the Japanese automaker with only the new small car, the Outlander Sport and the i-MiEV to bring to its already small lineup.”
Then again, those models haven’t been selling well. Utilizing Autodata figures, USA Today reports, “Mitsubishi has sold 36,431 vehicles through the first eight months of the year, down 4.4% from last year.”
According to Autoblog, Mitsubishi’s new small car should feature a “fuel-thrifty 1.0 or 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood” — which could be just what American car shoppers are looking for.
