TomTom HD Traffic Daily Auto News New TomTom GPS Lets You Warn Other Drivers of Speed Traps

After much speculation and a U.K. electronics store leak, TomTom launched its new HD model, the TomTom Go x40 LIVE, along with two other Go LIVE models, the 740 and 540 at Berlin’s IFA consumer electronics conference..

According to Jalopnik, the new x40 “allows users to update maps on the fly with the positions of police speed traps and traffic cameras…alerting other TomTom users in the area of their presence,” in addition to storing travel time data for every road by day of the week, in five-minute intervals.

Just as previous reported, the new GO LIVE also has “a nifty fuel feature which lets you know just how much gas prices are in the area,” Shiny Shiny says, “and you can use the Google Area Search to direct you to the cheapest petrol station.”

Engadget is one of the only voices of dissent. “Unfortunately, the versions we played with at IFA didn’t have a live connection, but software looks easy to access and easy to use,” they write. “Too bad the actual hardware look circa 2003.”

Another low point. The new Go LIVE series will be available in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Netherlands and Switzerland this fall, but no plans were announced for releasing stateside models. GPS Magazine hypothesizes a U.S. release in time for the holidays, but no other tech site joins them in this assumption.

“There’s of course a subscription fee for all this connectivity which is announced to be £9.95/month,” Navigadget reports. “TomTom 940 GO Live is expected to cost about £470 including taxes.” That converts to approximately $837.
