The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into the 2011 Hyundai Sonata’s steering system. Depending on what the investigation reveals, the all-new Sonata — which has only been on the market for a few months — may be recalled.

Autoblog explains: “NHTSA has received reports that cite problems with either a separation of the upper universal joint in the intermediate steering shaft assembly. The result is a complete loss of steering capability, though the universal joint was not completely separated.” An estimated 16,300 2011-model Sonatas will be investigated for the problem.

Despite the dangers that could result, no injuries stemming from the issue have been reported. “Hyundai spokesman Jim Trainor said the company isn’t aware of any accidents or injuries connected to the issue and is fully cooperating with NHTSA in its investigation,” writes the Detroit News.

If the NHTSA issues a recall, it’ll be a big blow to Hyundai. “The 2011 Sonata has been a big hit for Hyundai,” explains Motor Trend. “Through July, the Sonata has accounted for a full third of the company’s sales with 107,085 sold as of August 3. Sonata sales in July were up 33 percent over the previous year and up 45 percent over the first seven months of the year compared to the same period in 2009.”
