The future of the Nissan Titan pickup is in doubt.
Motor Trend reports, “In early 2008, Nissan and Chrysler were best buddies, announcing a trio of joint-venture projects for the near future. Fast forward to today. A joint statement has been written, with both companies agreeing to discontinue work on all three of them.” Two of the planned vehicles were new cars that never reached the market – a compact and a subcompact car Nissan would build for Chrysler to sell, probably outside the U.S. The third, however, was to be Nissan’s replacement for the aging Titan full-size pickup.
PickupTrucks.com adds, “Nissan expects to continue manufacturing the Titan at its assembly plant in Canton, Miss. for the foreseeable future.” However, the company has reportedly not worked to develop a next-generation Titan, planning instead to sell a vehicle based on the Dodge Ram in 2011 or 2012. Today’s announcement means that that won’t happen, and Nissan may be behind on developing a competitive replacement for the Titan.
Autoblog notes, “The joint release blames “significant changes in business conditions” as the reason for the breakup, though we suspect it has more to do with the condition of Chrysler than anything else.” Chrysler will likely get its future small cars from new owner Fiat.
