2010 Dodge Ram 2500 medium Daily Auto News Recall Alert: Dodge Ram Heavy Duty

Dodge has issued a recall order for about 186,000 diesel-powered Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy duty pickups from model years 2007 through 2009 in order to address a problem that could cause the trucks to stall, and to fail emissions inspections.

Motor Trend explains, “The soot problem stems from a software issue in the engine control module of the 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six. The problem not only triggers a check-engine light but, under certain conditions, causes the engine to produce enough soot to damage the turbocharger, exhaust gas recirculation valve, and diesel particulate filter.” The damaged valve could cause the truck to stall at idle. The blocked filter could cause it to fail emissions inspections in most states.

California Ram owners should have their trucks repaired promptly. PickupTrucks.com notes, “If you live in California and own one of the trucks affected by this recall, you’ll need to provide proof of repair before you can renew the truck’s annual registration.”

Dodge dealers will reprogram the software free of charge, which should correct the problem. The repair takes less than half an hour to complete. Dodge hasn’t announced a schedule for contacting owners, but those who wish to make their own repair arrangements can reach the company at (800) 853-1403
