Jaguar is recalling about 15,000 2004 XJ sedans due to a defect that could cause brakes to malfunction.

In a defect notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Jaguar explains that a noise-insulating pad included in the car’s undercarriage may allow dirt and water to collect in contact with rear brake pipes, which could cause the pipes to corrode. In a best-case scenario, pipe corrosion “can result in extended brake pedal travel combined with reduced braking performance.” In a worst-case scenario, “complete loss of service brakes will occur…potentially causing a vehicle crash.” Owners may see a “fluid level low” warning and a brake warning light illuminated in the car’s instrument cluster as an early warning sign that the pipes have been compromised.

Jaguar dealers will remove the pad, according to the defect notice, and not replace it. They will inspect the brake components, and if necessary, replace any worn brake pipes. Dealers will begin contacting XJ owners this month, but those who wish to make their own repair arrangements may contact Jaguar at 1-800-452-4827.
