If you own a Mini Cooper S, prepare to have your tailpipes trimmed..

You read that right. BMW (which owns Mini) is recalling the 2007 and 2009 editions of the Cooper S because the tailpipes stick out too far.

In a defect notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Mini explains that the centrally-located tailpipe extension on Cooper S models “protrudes slightly beyond the rear bumpers. It is possible for inadvertent contact to occur with a person’s leg” when they walk behind the car. “If the tailpipe extension is hot during inadvertent contact, a burn could occur.”

Dealers will remove the tailpipe extension and install one that is a few inches shorter, free of charge. This will have no impact on the performance of the car. That tailpipe extension serves no mechanical purpose – it’s just a style accent. Mini dealers will begin contacting owners in January, but those who wish to make early repair arrangements can contact Mini at 1(800) 831-1117.
