They’re among the largest ever seen on the Earth, and have been threatened with extinction in recent years. But a group of activists has come together to develop a plan to save this endangered species.
No, it isn’t whales.
It’s Hummers.
Automobile Magazine reports, “General Motors is already winding down operations at its Hummer brand, but it seems some individuals outside the company are lobbying for the marque’s survival.” The fund management firm Capital & Labor International Coalition, in existence for just a few months, has announced plans to hold a “Save Hummer Motors in America Summit” April 11 in Chicago. The company “is planning to invite all of Hummer’s stakeholders and dealers, several influential UAW members, and Jim Taylor — Hummer’s CEO — to the conference.
CLIC CEO Steve Danari told Motor Trend the group “has met with U.S. Senator Roland Burris, D-Illinois, and asked him to act as a liaison to the government for any possible aid in saving Hummer.” The Senator “confirmed the discussions, and noted he wants to see the ideas that come out of the Chicago summit.”
As befits any discussion about keeping Hummer alive in America, those ideas will come together over some well-aged steaks. In a press release, CLIC announces, “The Summit will commence at noon in the Hall of Fame Room at Coach Mike Ditka’s Restaurant in Chicago, to be followed by a press conference at 4:30pm at the same location.”
GM announced plans to close the all-SUV brand in late February, after talks with a potential buyer, China’s Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co, collapsed. Anyone taking on the brand would face the challenge of making Hummer comply with tough new federal fuel economy regulations that take effect in 2016.
General Motors, Automobile Magazine says, “Could not be reached for comment” on the summit.
