McCain medium Daily Auto News Survey: McCain Voters Drive Domestic; Obama Voters Drive...Domestic

Have you driven a Ford lately? Then chances are you’ll be pulling the lever for John McCain in November, according to a new survey. Your neighbor will drive his Subaru to the polls to vote the other way..

The Kansas City Star reports, “Bumper stickers supporting John McCain are more likely to be on a domestic automobile, while Barack Obama decals are more likely to pop up on imports, a survey finds.”

Actually, the Star adds, the survey of 8,000 motorists showed that “68 percent of likely McCain voters reported driving American cars most often, compared with 54 percent of likely Obama voters,” so that domestic car doesn’t necessarily make you a Republican.

Our own research says, however, that owning an SUV or a pickup truck just might.

Kicking Tires notes that “Of Obama voters, 37% said they drive Japanese cars, while only 27% of McCain voters said the same. When it comes to European cars, 10% of Obama voters ‘fessed up to driving one, while only a little over 5% of McCain voters admitted that their cars might have originated in the continent that contains France.”

Political strategists would want to know, the Star reports, that “Ford topped the list among the all-important undecided voters, followed by Chevrolet.” So perhaps Obama should make more appearances in his Ford Escape Hybrid, trying to look like the rest of us. If McCain were to comb through his thirteen cars for a blue oval, he’d find a 2007 F-150 pickup to get the job done.

But with the financial crisis taking over the news, bipartisanship matters more than ever. There’s a car for that, too. Kicking Tires reports, “The only strange finding was that the exact same percentage of McCain and Obama supporters — 8.2% — drove Hondas.” McCain’s safe again — he’s got a 2001 Accord buried somewhere.
