The original Talex was a regular star performer in Auto Express speed trap locator tests, before the firm hit trouble in 2007.
Two new companies rose from its ashes: Novus GPS took over the Talex database, and has already scored a win in our most recent locator test. And now, the Talex name is back – with a new unit that’s said to be the smallest locator money can buy. The new owner is so confident in the product, it is offering a 30-day free trial.
As before, the set-up has a single-line display which shows details of static or mobile speed camera sites. Voice warnings also give the prevailing limit. The locator should be accurate as it uses the latest SiRF Star III receiver. Downloading updated info couldn’t be easier with the USB cable – but to do this, you need to pay a £29 subscription for 12 months or £59 for three years. What’s more, until the Road Safety Bill is enacted and laser detectors banned, you can add a 12V plug-in laser sensor and use it perfectly legally. This £79 extra warns of hand-held and van-mounted speed guns.
