Daily Auto News The Ten Most Stolen Cars
Daily Auto News

It may look old enough to qualify for a Cash for Clunkers deal, but you still need to lock the Grand Caravan. Thieves are after those things.
MSNBC reports, “A car is stolen every 26 seconds in the United States, costing the American public nearly $7.6 billion each year. And if the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s list of the most frequently stolen cars of 2008 is any indication, auto theft can happen to anyone.” After all, “the most stolen vehicle in American is one you can buy legally for $3,000.” It’s the 1994 Honda Accord.
There is good news in the report. The Chicago Tribune notes, “2008 was the fifth consecutive year of declining vehicle thefts.”
Those most at risk are old model years of popular cars. Bureau spokesman Frank Scafidi told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution there are several reasons for that trend. Older cars, he says, are “are easier to sell for parts.” In some cases, the parts stripped from an older model-year car can be worth twice as much as the car itself. “Newer models are also more difficult, but not impossible to steal thanks to anti-theft technology incorporated by the manufacturers.”
In a press release, the Bureau lists the top ten:
1. 1994 Honda Accord
2. 1995 Honda Civic
3. 1989 Toyota Camry
4. 1997 Ford F-150 Pickup
5. 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup
6. 2000 Dodge Caravan
7. 1996 Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee
8. 1994 Acura Integra
9. 1999 Ford Taurus
10. 2002 Ford Explorer
The Bureau, a non-profit organization funded by insurance companies that works with law enforcement agencies to track insurance-related crime, conducts its annual study based on data from the FBI’s annual Uniform Crime Report.
