Daily Auto News Toyota Compact Hybrid Concept FT-CH Debuts in Detroit

Among the many concept cars to debut at the 2010 North American International Auto Show is Toyota’s FT-CH — a uniquely-styled, four-passenger compact hybrid.
According to Jalopnik: “The FT-CH is the first piece of Toyota’s ‘Prius family’ marketing strategy, an approach that the Japanese firm claims its customers and dealers have been asking for. It is twenty-two inches shorter than a Prius and less than one inch narrower, and it’s intended to port Toyota’s hybrid philosophy into a fun small car.”
If the FT-CH makes it to production, industry analysts believe it may very well be a success. “Toyota didn’t say this concept is for sure destined for the showroom floor, but they were hinting at it,” writes Autoblog. “The reason we can see this being popular is that, if Toyota sells it, the FT-CH would be priced below the Prius and aimed at a younger audience.”
Like the Prius, the FT-CH maintains a style all its own. Cars.com reports: “The interior is completely space-age looking, with a steering wheel borrowed from director James Cameron’s prop room. … Even the exterior design is a flight of fancy with headlights placed near the windshield and no noticeable rear bumper, making damage to the rear a potential assault on the wallet. The fancy wheels, however, look terrific and aerodynamic.”
Details regarding the FT-CH’s performance components have yet to be announced.
