March was a great month for Toyota shoppers. But if you’re in the market for a new Toyota, you haven’t missed your chance. The automaker has extended heavy incentives into April.

USA Today reports, “The company announced today that will extend heavy incentives at least through May 3.” Battered by negative news stories, Toyota watched its sales plummet early in 2010. In March, the company responded with a round of heavy discounts of the sort most Japanese automakers rarely offer. “The incentives drove a nearly 41% sales rise in March,” so the company has elected to “continue the lease deals for eight of its best-sellers,” including popular models like the Camry, Corolla and RAV4, “and continue 0%/60 month financing on six of them.”

Edmunds Inside Line notes, “The automaker also announced it will expand its free two-year maintenance program to cover all customers, not just repeat buyers.” Toyota deals are regional – an incentive offered on a Camry in the Pacific Northwest often differs significantly from that offered on the same car in the Mid-Atlantic states. But in most parts of the country, Toyota buyers now qualify for two years of free scheduled maintenance.

Some analysts say that Toyota needs the incentives to keep its huge market share, as competitors products have improved in recent years. Kelley Blue Book analyst James Bell tells the Boston Globe that “Bargain hunters and Toyota loyalists” drove the company’s recent sales gain. “Once they get past those groups, it’s getting tough to reach buyers who are looking at models from Ford, Subaru, all the others”
