Toyota Recalls RAV4, Highlander for Faulty Airbag Sensor

If you own a Toyota RAV4 or a Highlander, the latest recall from Toyota may apply to you. “Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced that it intends to conduct a voluntary Safety Recall involving certain 2007 through 2008 model year RAV4 and certain 2008 Highlander and Highlander HV vehicles sold in the United States to replace the airbag sensor assembly” Toyota writes in a press release. “There are approximately 214,000 RAV4 vehicles and approximately 94,000 Highlander and Highlander HV vehicles covered by this Safety Recall.&rdquo.
Two sensors in the airbag system that are designed to detect roll angle are at fault. “If one sensor malfunctions, the airbag warning light will come on and the roll detection system will be suspended but the airbag would still work in a side collision,” reports the Detroit News. “If both sensors fail after an airbag system check, it could trigger the airbag and the seatbelt pretensioners.”
No word on whether or not any injuries have occurred from the faulty airbag system. “The company says no other Lexus or Toyota models are involved in this recall and this particular problem involves only vehicles sold in North America,” says the Wall Street Journal. “Vehicles in other markets don’t have the roll-sensing airbag system.”
Owners of affected vehicles can expect the recall to begin next month. If you have questions regarding this recall, you can contact Toyota directly at 1-800-331-4331 or by visiting www.toyota.com/recall.
