Auto news; Unwanted cars taking to the seas! A sight that is becoming ever more familiar as unsold cars mount up at quayside.
Unsold motors are piling up at ports around the world – so car manufacturers are taking to the seas for storage!
Huge ships normally used to transport vehicles are now doubling up as makeshift car parks instead, as harbourside terminals get increasingly packed with motors that dealers can’t shift.
The Morning Glory car carrier, operated by shipping giant Wallenius Wilhelmsen, has been chartered by Toyota to store 2,500 new cars at Malmo in Sweden. Hoegh Autoliners has also admitted it is starting work to help car firms find extra storage space.
Meanwhile, in the UK, ports big enough to store vehicles are close to full capacity, while smaller transporters are being left empty at the harbourside in Truro, Cornwall. The Bristol Port Company, which brings more than 650,000 cars into the country every year, has around 115,000 motors on site, while more than 12,000 cars are parked up in Southampton.
