2009 Mercedes Benz R Class medium Daily Auto News Updated Mercedes R Class to Debut in New York

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz R-Class is expected to make its debut at the New York Auto Show this week. The upscale family hauler gets some much-needed changes that make it look more like an SUV and less like an elongated wagon/minivan.

“Right away, we must say that the R-Class’s new schnoz is a giant leap forward from drooping proboscis of the outgoing car,” says Autoblog. “New, more chiseled headlamps accent a larger, more upright grille and a less angular hood.” The R-Class will come with 17-inch or 19-inch alloy wheels.

Interior changes are expected to be more minor, with the exception of a new AMG sport option. It comes with different seats, a special steering wheel, a lighting packaged and stainless steel pedals. Edmunds Inside Line notes that this will be the first time such a package is available for the U.S. market. The R-Class will offer both six- and seven-passenger seating.

The R-Class’ engines are expected to be the same as those in the 2010 model: a 268-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and a 210-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel.

Mercedes is hoping the changes will add up to better sales for the ailing R-Class. According to Auto Week, “Mercedes sold 2,825 copies of the R350 in 2009, down 63.5 percent from the year earlier. This year, sales of the R350 totaled 295 units in the first two months, down 46.1 percent from the same period last year.”
