Why do vampires drive Volvos? It seems like crash protection wouldn’t matter particularly much to the undead. Yet, there they are, all over movie screens, driving Swedish cars best known for their high-tech crash avoidance features and unusually rigid safety cages.

The Boston Globe explains, “Vampires have taken a bite out of pop culture, thanks in no small part to the massive success of the Twilight books and films. To keep rabid fans of the series appeased, stores from Hot Topic to Toys ‘R’ Us to Nordstrom have been pumping out all kinds of merchandise to fulfill fans’ every wish.” The tie-ins include some “bizarre, ridiculous, and unnecessary Twilight-related paraphernalia,” and none of it seems stranger than the automotive tie in – the Edward Cullen Volvo.

The teenage vampire drives a $37,000 Swedish SUV. Or maybe a little Swedish hatchback. He seems to have bought a bigger car for his Senior year of high school, abandoning his little C30 for a much larger XC60 between the first and second film.

Director Chris Weitz tells MTV, “I’ve taken a real spanking for this, a lot of heat.” But he insists Volvo forced his hand. “Volvo wanted to give us a new, different car so I didn’t want to paint it exactly the same silver color, because then [Twilighters] would be saying, ‘Why are they trying to say that it’s the same car; it’s obviously not.’ So, I thought, ‘Well, I’ll choose a new color!’ And I thought I would choose slate black, not a reflective black, because it actually absorbs light and it would reflect the mood and melancholy and depression [of his character]. I know I got it wrong, I apologize for that. But that is my reasoning.”

Paint job aside, the undead tie-in has paid off for Volvo. We’ve seen traffic to our XC60 meta-review spike in the run-up to the film. Other auto websites have, too. Cars.com reports that “more people read [their] XC60 review over the past seven days than any other new-car review.”
